I am currently on a Z visa and working in China, but I want to apply to a PhD program. I am asked in the application to submit a medical examination form and a non-criminal background check. Hello. After obtaining a temporary driver's license in China, can foreigners drive only within Beijing, or is it valid in other cities as well?
+

Hello! The Motor Vehicle Administration Office of the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau replies as follows.

According to the Regulations on the Application and Use of Motor Vehicle Driving Licenses (Order No. 90 of the Ministry of Public Security) (《机动车驾驶证申领和使用规定》(公安部90号令)), any foreigner temporarily staying in China who wish to drive a rented vehicle must apply for a temporary driving permit from the local traffic management authority where the rental company is located. The temporary driving permit allows its holder to drive small passenger cars and small automatic cars. Each permit is valid for three months, or for the approved stay duration of the holder (even if the holder's stay period exceeds three months; the maximum validity period is no more than 1 year). During this period, you can enter and exit China multiple times without needing to reapply.

To apply for a temporary driving permit, you must visit a service office with the following materials:

Exit-entry document: a valid passport or any other entry-exit document, a valid visa or residence permit, or a Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card. (If you have entered China visa-free, a valid passport or any other entry-exit document is sufficient.)

Valid foreign driver's license (temporary, learner's, or provisional licenses are not accepted). Licenses not in Chinese require an official or notarized translation into Chinese.

Two recent one-inch color passport photos with a white background.

Service Location:

The Motor Vehicle Management Office of the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau (including its branch offices), the Vehicle Management Service Station of Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital International Airport, the Vehicle Management Service Station of Beijing Daxing International Airport.

Foreigners aged 70 or older must apply at the Motor Vehicle Management Office of the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau and pass memory, judgment, and reaction tests.

Beijing Municipal Administration Center of Parks

Hello, I want to travel to Beijing in April and hope to watch the flag-raising ceremony at Tian'anmen Square. May I ask how to make a reservation?
+

Hello.

I. Reservation Method

The web portal for reservations of visits to Tian'anmen Square currently does not support non-Chinese phone numbers for registration. Please access the ""Tian'anmen Square Reservation"" (天安门广场预约参观) WeChat mini program and reserve via the ""Personal Reservation"" (个人预约) section. If you don't have WeChat, you can authorize others to reserve on your behalf. Each reservation order can be made for up to 7 people (including 4 adults, and 3 children aged no more than 6 or under 1.2 meters), and each person's name and passport number should be provided.

II. Facilitated Reservation Method

Any visitor who has successfully made a reservation for the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China, or any other designated site open to the public can enter Tian'anmen Square in the morning and afternoon hours with the reservation record on the day of the visit. In this case, there's no need to make an extra reservation of Tian'anmen Square. Currently, the international version of the website of the National Museum of China supports booking by email and passport number, and each single order can cover up to five people.

If none of the methods mentioned above works, please try to book a visit to the National Museum of China first.

For more questions, you can call the reservation consultation hotline at +86-10-86409123 (Chinese-language services only). (Press 6 for manual services. Service hours: 8:00-17:30 daily)

Thank you for your understanding and support!

Click “预订BOOK” → “Tickets” to access the Trip.com ticket page for Badaling. For further inquiries, you may call +86 (10) 61118002 (foreign language service available).

4. Visiting the Confucius Temple and the Imperial College Museum:

No reservation is required. Tickets can be purchased on-site with a valid ID (passport).

5. Reservation for Tiananmen Square Visit:

The web version of the Tiananmen Square reservation system does not support international phone number verification. It is recommended to use the WeChat mini-program “天安门广场预约参观” and click the “Individual Reservation” section. If you do not have WeChat, someone else can book on your behalf. Each reservation can include up to 7 people (4 adults and 3 children under 6 years old or under 1.2 meters tall).

If you have already successfully reserved a visit to the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, the Great Hall of the People, or the National Museum of China, you can access Tiananmen Square during morning or afternoon sessions with that reservation record—no separate square reservation is needed.

It is known that the international version of the National Museum of China allows reservations by email and passport number, up to 5 people per reservation. If neither of the above methods works, try reserving a visit to the National Museum.

For other reservation-related inquiries, please call +86 (10) 86409123 (no English service currently available). Press 6 for human assistance. Service hours: daily from 8:00 to 17:30.

Hello, I plan to fly to Daxing Airport, then transfer to Xi'an Airport, and finally go to Milan. I will stay in China for a total of 11 hours. May I ask whether I should apply for a 24-hour or 240-hour transit visa?
+

Hello. You are eligible for the 24-hour visa-free transit policy. To apply for the 24-hour visa-free transit, you must hold an international travel document with a validity period of more than three months, and have an onward ticket for departing to a third country/region within 24 hours (with a confirmed seat number). If you meet the aforementioned conditions, please apply at the counter issuing temporary entry permits at the port of your entry in Beijing, where the police officer on duty will review your application. The final result will depend on the on-site review. This only applies if you will board a plane, ship, or train, and is not applicable for traveling by walking, by car, or through land ports. Since the answer to your question may vary depending on your specific situation, we hereby advise you to contact the National Immigration Administration at +86-10-12367 (foreign language services are available) for detailed information.

Hello, can I still obtain a 144-hour transit visa at Beijing West Railway Station now? I plan to enter Chinese mainland from Hong Kong Kowloon Station by high-speed rail and then apply for a 144-hour or 240-hour visa. After that, I will stay in Beijing for 6 days to travel and then go to Vancouver, Canada. I have booked tickets for myself and my family. Thank you for your reply.
+

Hello, you need to apply for the 240-hour visa-free transit at a port in Shenzhen, which requires you to first enter China through Shenzhen. Your itinerary meets the requirements for the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, but we still need to know your nationality. For detailed and accurate information, we recommend contacting Shenzhen Immigration directly at +86-755-12367 (foreign language services available). Beijing 12345 Hotline

Hello, my son is 14 years old. He will come to Beijing for a trip with his adult sister. May I ask how to use the 240-hour transit visa-free policy? What documents and materials are required?
+

Hello, we still need you to provide the following information: your nationality, your scope of activities in China, passport details, and whether you have booked onward tickets to a third country/region. Additionally, the 144-hour transit visa-free policy has no age restrictions, and no supporting documents are required.

Eligibility for 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit:

1. You must be a citizen of a country covered by the policy.

2. You must hold a valid international travel document with a validity period of at least 3 months, and meet the entry requirements of the third country/region concerned.

3. You must hold an onward ticket (with a set date and seat) for departing for a third country/region within 240 hours (or any other related proof), complete the arrival card for temporary entry, and receive immigration inspection.

If you meet the aforementioned conditions, you can apply for visa-free transit at any of the 60 designated ports in China (including those in Beijing). Upon approval, the immigration inspection authority will grant you temporary entry. After that, you can travel across 24 provincial-level administrative divisions covered by the policy, provided that you will not stay for more than 240 hours, and exit the Chinese mainland through any of the designated ports. The visa-free stay period is calculated from 00:00 on the day after the day of entry.

It should be noted that you may engage in tourism, business, family visits, and other non-restricted activities as a visa-free traveler. However, for working, studying, news coverage, or any other purpose requiring a separate visa, you will still need to obtain a visa first. Your application result will be subject to on-site review. If you are covered by bilateral or unilateral visa-free policies of China, the relevant provisions shall prevail.

Since the answer to your question may vary depending on your actual situation, we advise you to contact the National Immigration Administration at +86 -10-12367 (foreign language services are available).
